IRVINE, Calif. -
Senior Andrew Gunson shot a 3-over par 216 to finish in a tie for sixth-place, helping UC Santa Barbara to a seventh-place finish at the Folino Invitational hosted by Cal State Fullerton at the Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine, Calif.
Gunson was tied for first in the tournament after two rounds but could not hold on. After the first 36 holes, he was even-par 142, but in the third round, the Scotland-native shot a 74 and fell into a tie for sixth.
Gunson's sixth-place finish highlighted a group of three UCSB players who finished among the top-25. In fact, every Gaucho golfer was among the top-30.
The tournament was won by Cal Poly, which finished at 15-over par 867. The Mustangs bested UC Irvine by three shots and host Cal State Fullerton by eight.
UCSB will get virtually no break at all as it heads to the Barona Collegiate Cup, hosted by San Diego State, on Mar. 24-25.
The Gauchos will host their first tournament since 2009 when they welcome a 16-team field to the OGIO Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 28-29 at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara.
