Stockton, Calif. -
Senior Jeff Wood shot a course record 65 in the first round of the Pacific Invitational, but it was not enough as UC Santa Barbara finished tied for 11th in its first golf tournament of the year.
The Gauchos, playing with some new faces, shot a three-round total of 889 to tie with Washington State for 11th place. The 889 total put UCSB at +25 for the tournament. San Diego State led a group of three teams that finished under par, shooting an 845, good for -19. Alabama-Birmingham finished second at 850 (-14) and Cal was third at 859 (-5).
Wood's first round score of 65 was a new record for The Reserve Golf Club in Stockton. He followed that up with a 79 and a 73 to finish at 217 for the tournament, tying him for 17th-place. Newcomer J.R. Becko shot a 225 to tie for 40th. Returnees Scott Linklater shot 226 to finish tied for 44th and Christian Helland shot 228 to finish tied for 58th. Another newcomer, Jeff Greenfield, shot 230 to tie for 67th.
UCSB returns to action at the STRATA Classic on October 9-10. The STRATA Classic is hosted by Pepperdine at the Saticoy Country Club in Ventura.
