SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara will host the OGIO-Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at scenic Sandpiper Golf Club on the coast just north of Santa Barbara, on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 28-29, 2011. The tournament will be 54 holes, 36 on the first day, and 18 on day two.
The OGIO-Santa Barbara Intercollegiate Tournament will be played at Sandpiper for the first time since 2003. The last tournament hosted by UCSB was in 2008 and was played at Rancho San Marcos. Previous tourneys were played at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc and the Alisal River Course in Solvang.
"Sandpiper is a beautiful and challenging course," said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. "I also think it is good for the schools in the tournament to play a course that really reflects Santa Barbara and Sandpiper certainly does. We've been very honored in the past to play at La Purisima, Rancho San Marcos, and the Alisal River Course and I'm sure this year will be another great experience."
In addition to UCSB, the tournament field will include Big West Conference rivals Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, Pacific and UC Riverside. Fresno State, Oregon, Brown, Cal State Bakersfield, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Seattle University, San Jose State, Weber State and the University of British Columbia will round out the 16-team field. There will be several individuals competing as well.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday, Mar. 28 with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. The final 18 holes on Tuesday, Mar. 29 with tee times ranging from 8:00-9:40 a.m. Sandpiper is a 7,068-yard, par 72 course. Admission to the tournament is free.
The last OGIO-Santa Barbara Intercollegiate, held in 2008, was won by Cal State Northridge and the individual winner was Troy Merritt of Boise State. Past individual champions have included Craig Stadler (1973), Scott Simpson (1977) and Duffy Waldorf (1985).
