UCSB Ties for 12th at Rain-Shortened Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
Greg Wells shot a nine-over par 149, and Darren Schwartz shot a 10-over par 150, to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 12th-place tie at the rain-abbreviated Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The first two rounds, played on Monday, were played in drizzle and rain on the California Coast. The University of Oregon shot a team-total of 582 to win the title. The Ducks were followed by Kansas (584), UCLA (586), Stanford (589) and UC Irvine (590) to round out the top-five.
Cal Poly's J.J. Scurich shot a two-under par 138 to win the individual title by two strokes over UCLA's Daniel Im.
In addition to Wells and Schultz, Gaucho finishers included Marty Melcher, who shot a 152, including a team-best 72 in the first round, to finish tied with teammate Joe Ryon for 51st-place. Sean Meier shot 165 to finish 90th for UCSB.
The Gauchos return to action on Monday, April 4, when they host the BITE/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc.
