SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore golfer Glen Scher, who became the first Gaucho in nearly four years to win a tournament, was named Big West Golfer of the Month for March, the conference announced Thursday.
Scher recorded a 7-under par 209 to collect medalist honors at the Barona Collegiate Cup on Mar. 24-25. The victory was even more impressive because the field included 100 golfers.
"It wasn't quite five years, but it was close," said UCSB head coach Steve Lass. "It was really exciting down the stretch and Glen really came through. He knew what he needed to do and he did it."
Scher's victory was not only the first since Brian Hollenbeck won the Bill Cullum Invitational in the fall of 2007, it was the first UCSB victory in a spring tournament since Jeff Wood won the Big West individual title in 2001.
In addition to his title at the Barona Collegiate Cup, the Agoura Hills, Calif., native finished 16th out of 100 golfers at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, 26th out of 53 participants at the Folino Men's Invitational and 20th out of 87 players at the OGIO-UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
Scher and the Gauchos travel to Scottsdale, Ariz., to play in the Wyomong Desert Classic on Monday and Tuesday, April 4-5.
