SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara golf team will travel to Orange County on Monday and Tuesday for the 2011 Big West Championship Tournament. This year's tourney will be held at the Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, Calif.
The nine Big West teams will play two rounds on Monday with the first round teeing off at 8:15 a.m. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning with a 9:00 a.m. tee-off time.
The Gauchos, coached by Steve Lass, are led by a pair of seniors and a sophomore. Seniors Andrew Gunson and Tyler Weir, and sophomore Glen Scher, have all played well this year. Scher actually leads the team with a 73.46 stroke average. On Mar. 25, he became the first UCSB player in nearly a decade to win a spring tournament when he shot a 7-under par 209 at the Barona Collegiate Cup.
Gunson has a stroke average of 73.68. In his last two completed tournaments, the OGIO-Santa Barbara Invitational at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara and the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, he recorded fifth-place finishes. On April 11 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, he shot an outstanding 69 in the second round, but on the last hole of the round he injured his hand and was unable to play the final 18. The injury has heeled and he could be a key factor at the league championship.
Weir was up-and-down during the fall season but has found his stride in the spring. In fact, he has had top-five finishes in two of his last three outings. He finished fifth at the OGIO-Santa Barbara Invitational and fourth at the regular season's final tournament, the Braveheart Classic. Weir completed the regular campaign with a 74.00 stroke average, but the average was under 73.00 over the last three tournaments.
Paul Otte and Scott Lewis will complete UCSB's lineup at the tournament. Otte has played in nine tournaments in 2010-11 and averaged 75.37 shots per round. his highest finish was a 21st-place at the Folino Invitational in March. Lewis has played in just three tournaments this year, is averaging 75.87 shots per round, and has best finish of 20th at the OGIO-Santa Barbara Invitational.
