Gauchos in the Pros: Silva and Garza Net Goals this Week

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Former UCSB stars and current Major League Soccer rookies Luis Silva and Sam Garza each netted goals for their respective teams this week.

Silva scored on Wednesday evening as Toronto FC took on the LA Galaxy at the Rogers Center in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal.

Silva headed a looping pass from the right wing by Torsten Frings into the lower right corner past LA goalkeeper Josh Saunders to put Toronto ahead, 2-0, in the 17th minute. The team settled for a 2-2 draw.

Garza scored the fifth goal in the San Jose Earthquakes' 5-0 route of Chivas USA at Portland's JELD-WEN Field on Sunday in the team's final preseason match.

In the 88th minute, Secran Guvenisik sprung the rookie midfielder with a through ball from the right wing. Garza took a touch before slotting a shot from a tight angle to make it 5-0 San Jose.

Garza will return to the field for the MLS First Kick on March 10 against the New England Revolution. Silva will return to his native Los Angeles to face the Galaxy on Wednesday, March 14.
