SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After leading a UCSB back line that picked up clean sheets against Sacramento State and Cal Poly to close out the regular season, senior defender Daniel Welsh was included in Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week.
From the Top Drawer release: "Under the bright lights and TV cameras, Welsh and the Gauchos had their best game of the season on Saturday in a 2-0 win over Cal Poly. The senior center back shut down Mackenzie Pridham, one of the top forwards in the country, for 90 minutes and helped the Gauchos cruise to their first undefeated conference campaign since 2003."
It is the second time this season that a Gaucho has been honored by the soccer publication, after Goffin Boyoko made the cut following a three goal weekend to open the season.
Since losing Peter Schmetz to a knee injury in late October, Welsh and freshman defender Nick DePuy have teamed up to forge one of the more formidable center back combinations in the conference. In their final three games of the regular season, UCSB allowed just one goal. On the year, the Gauchos put together the best goals against average (0.78) of any team in the conference.
Welsh and the rest of the Gauchos return to action this Friday when they host either Cal Poly or Cal State Northridge in the Big West Tournament Semifinals. It is the 11th time in the past 12 seasons that UCSB has reached the postseason. Tickets for that game are now available, and can be purchased by calling 805-893-UCSB.
