SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Announced on Monday afternoon, freshman standout Rodney Michael was named Big West Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after leading UC Santa Barbara to conference opening wins against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside last week.
The Freetown, Sierra Leone native and Dunn School product contributed two assists and a goal in a 5-2 offensive outburst over the Titans before netting the final goal in a 3-1 win over the Highlanders.
After scoring just five goals through the first eight matches of the season, Michael led a UCSB offense that exploded for eight goals in two games to start Big West play. He is now tied with Ignacio Tellechea for the team-lead with four goals and ranks third in the conference with 11 points on four goals and three assists.
Michael is the second Gaucho to be honored by the Big West this season after Alan Carrillo earned Defensive Player of the Week honors earlier this year.
UCSB (4-4-2, 2-0-0 Big West) has now won four straight matches and kicks off a three-game road trip with Cal State Northridge (5-5-1, 0-1-1 Big West) this Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7:00 p.m. Video and live stats will be available.
