Roach Receives First Career Big West Defensive Player of the Week Award, Ballard McBride Gets Third Freshman Honor

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Roach and freshman attacking midfielder Finn Ballard McBride's performances in the last week for the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team have earned them the Big West Defensive and Freshman Player of the Week awards, respectively.

Roach was voted as the defensive honoree for the first time in his career after making four saves in the Gauchos' 2-2 draw at No. 25 UC San Diego, including a crucial save in the first overtime period that helped the team earn the result, and making one save in UCSB's 3-1 victory over Cal Poly.

The Santa Barbara HS product has been a standout in goal for the Gauchos this season, making several key saves, maintaining exceptional control of his area, and managing what has been an ever-changing backline due to injuries.

Ballard McBride earns his third freshman of the week award in four weeks after scoring the Gauchos' third goal in their 3-1 win on Saturday. It was his fourth goal of the season and third goal or assist in Santa Barbara's last four games.

The Australian won his first freshman award on Sept. 16, and picked up his second on Sept. 30 along with his inaugural offensive player of the week award.

UCSB carries its eight-game unbeaten streak into Big West Conference play as they get ready to take on Sacramento State on Wednesday night at Harder Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The match will be streamed and live stats will be available, both of which are accessible via the men's soccer schedule page.
