After missing the first game of the season with an injury Apilado appeared in and started all of the remaining 21, the second most by any field player on the season and the most among returnees...Earned Second Team All-Big West honors after helping the Gaucho defense to a conference-best 1.02 goals against average...The three-year starter helped hold the opposition to single digit shot totals in seven matches and less than 15 shots in 16, twice giving up just five attempts...Tied for fifth on the team with three assists to bump his career total to 10, tying for the team lead amongst returnees...Assisted on both goals in the 2-0 win over Cal in the second round of the NCAA Tournament...As a team UCSB allowed just 70 corner kicks on the season, in Apilado's 21 games they allowed just 63...Tallied nine shots on the season, twice recording two in a single game against Westmont and Cal Poly.
Expected to see time in the midfield, he made 20 starts as a defender, the fifth most on the team and the second most among returnees...UCSB's defense, with Apilado as a mainstay, ranked 16th in the nation with a 0.45 shutout percentage and 22nd in the nation with a 0.89 goals against average...One of seven players to appear in all 22 matches...Led all defenders and was fourth on the team with six assists...Recorded an assist hat-trick against Cal State Northridge on 11/6, tying him for the eleventh best single-game performance in Division I...Notched a second multi-assist game with two against UC Irvine (11/16), putting him third on the team with five in Big West play...Scored his goal against Southwest Missouri State at the St. Louis Nike Classic...Second among defenders with eight total.
In his first year with the Gauchos, Apilado quickly became a key contributor in the UCSB midfield with his ball control and passing ability...Assisted on a goal in the first game of his career, a 2-0 victory over Illinois-Chicago...A part-time starter, he appeared in 17 games, starting 10...Finished the season with 10 shots and one assist...Was one of only five players to start all 10 Big West games.
Played club soccer for the San Juan Lightning, helping them to two State and one Regional Championship and a third-place finish at Nationals...Played in numerous international tournaments with the San Juan Lightning...Member of his Regional ODP squad for four years and was included in the ODP's national pool...Competed in multiple international tournaments in Europe with the ODP team.
Apilado came to UCSB from Vacaville High School...Helped lead his team to two consecutive Monticello Empire League Championships...A four-time All-MEL selection in addition to being named the MEL's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year his senior season...Gathered 42 goals and 51 assists in his career...Named to the CIF All-Academic Team...Also played basketball for the Bulldogs.
Jonathan Lenon Pascual Apilado was born on January 12, 1983 in Vallejo, California...Majoring in Business Economics with a minor in Sports Management...Is a fan of basketball superstar Michael Jordan and would love to play on the same team as him...His favorite movie is "Kill Bill"...Enjoys watching "Def Poetry" on HBO...His favorite stadium to play in is UCSB's Harder Stadium...Enjoys reading "Four Four Two" magazine...His favorite video game is "Street Fighter II"...When he is not playing soccer is cruisin' in the PT...He can't do without his Nike Dunks and underground hip-hop...His favorite athlete is And1's Hot Sauce...His most memorable sporting moments came when he scored the game tying goal against Boca on a bicycle kick in the final seconds, along with the USA advancing to the second round of the World Cup in 2002...Losing in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament is one of his most disappointing moments in sports...Lifetime member of CSF and four year Honor Roll student at Vacaville High...Belonged to Vacaville High School's Asian Pacific Islander Club...Also recruited by Brown, Yale, Stanford, Cal and UC Davis...Would like people to know that he is a nice guy, but can best be described as the hardcore No. 6 on the UCSB soccer team...Before every game he likes to grub at the Beachside Cafe...Nicknamed "Api"...Has a older sister, Shantelle...Son of Jose and Joy Apilado.
