Drew McAthy's Overtime Goal Gives Men's Soccer A 3-2 Win Over No. 22 Michigan State As The Gauchos Claim The Michigan State Classic Tournament Title
Sept. 2, 2002
East Lansing, Mich. -
UC Santa Barbara1s Drew McAthy scored unassisted with just under five minutes remaining in overtime play to propel the Gauchos to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Michigan State.
With the win, UCSB claimed the Michigan State Classic tournament title by way of a 2-0 tourney record. The Gauchos defeated Michigan 5-3 on Sunday before putting away the host school 3-2 today.
Santa Barbara took the game1s first lead when sophomore Matt Bly took a pass from Gene Deering and found the back of the net at the 39:28 mark for his first goal of the season. The lead did not last long as Michigan State1s Jordan Gruber beat keeper Danny Kennedy less than three minutes later.
The score would remained tied at 1-1 heading into halftime after UCSB had an early goal called back.
Twenty-five minutes passed in the second half before senior foward Rob Friend wheeled in a bicycle kick from the top of the goal-box to put the Gauchos up 2-1 for his second goal of the tournament.
Once again, UCSB1s lead did not last long. At 78:51 in the match the Gauchos fouled a State player inside the penalty box giving the Spartans a free shot at tying the game. MSU1s Kellan Kalso converted on the penalty kick knotting the score at 2-2, which eventually sent the game into overtime.
However, the penalty kick wasn1t the only action that took place at the 78:51 mark that affected the outcome of the game. UCSB1s Matt Kubota and MSU1s Brett Konley were each cautioned with yellow cards before the kick, but it was Santa Barbara goalkeeper Danny Kennedy who walked off with a red card and was ejected from the match following the free kick. When the dust settled the Gauchos were a man down and true freshman Kyle Reynish was making his first collegiate appearance in between the pipes for UCSB.
Reynish performed superbly keeping Santa Barbara in the match with two saves in the second sudden-victory overtime period setting the stage for McAthy.
With time winding down and under five minutes left to play, sophomore forward Drew McAthy netted his second goal of the tournament at 105:33 giving the Gauchos the 3-2 victory and the tourney title.
UCSB (2-0) outshot its opponents 38-to-25 and averaged 4.0 goals a game in its opening weekend of the play. Forward Rob Friend led the scoring for Santa Barbara with five points off of a pair of goals and an assist, while midfielder Dan Young and forward Drew McAthy each finished with two goals apiece, both scoring the two game-winners.
The Gauchos return to Santa Barbara for their home opener this Friday, September 6th when they host St. Mary1s at 6:00 pm in Harder Stadium in a doubleheader with the UCSB women1s team.
