SAN DIEGO -
Senior forward Drew McAthy scored in the 40th minute of the match and senior goalkeeper Dan Kennedy recorded seven saves to make it stand up, as the 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team opened its 2004 season with a 1-0 win at San Diego State Wednesday afternoon.
At the 39:17 mark, McAthy took a pass in the goal box from junior midfielder Jonathan Davis, a transfer from North Carolina, and scored on a shot that deflected off an Aztec defender and past goalkeeper Tally Hall.
San Diego State (0-1) outshot UCSB (1-0) 16-11, including 9-4 in the second half. There were also seven total cautions issued in the physical match.
The Gauchos are now unbeaten in their last five season openers (4-0-1). Kennedy has recorded three consecutive regular season shutouts and 22 overall in his career, tied for second all-time with Ryan Sparre. The goal by McAthy was the 36th of his career, tying him with Eric Price for second on UCSB's all-time list.
UCSB returns to action on Saturday, September 4, when it hosts crosstown rival Westmont College in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium.
