ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UC Santa Barbara (0-1-1) recovered from an early deficit and tied New Mexico (1-0-1), 1-1, in a double overtime match at the UNM Soccer Complex on Saturday evening.
New Mexico wasted no time, recording a goal in the eighth minute of the game. Devon Sandavol recorded his first goal of the season when his shot rebounded off of a defender and into the back of the Gauchos' goal.
The Lobos out-shot the Gauchos 3-1 in the first half. UCSB's lone shot in the period came from sophomore Sam Garza in the 30th minute, but the attempt went wide.
Trailing by one in the second half, Garza attempted to get the Gauchos back in the game, firing his second shot of the match and first on-goal in the 52nd minute. Just over three minutes later, he got UCSB on the scoreboard when his shot from inside the box sailed past Lobo goalkeeper Justin Holmes.
The Lobos out-shot the Gauchos 6-4 in the remaining 30 minutes of regulation play, but Gaucho goalkeeper senior Sam Hayden was able to stop all three that came on goal to preserve the 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime period junior Peter McGlynn and Garza both fired off shots in the first five minutes, but both shots sailed high, forcing the game into a second overtime period.
Garza recorded his seventh shot of the game in the 103rd minute, but it was blocked. His attempt was the final of the match and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
UCSB out-shot New Mexico 11-10 with each team recording four shots on-goal. Garza led UCSB with his seven shots, three of which came on goal.
With the tie, the Gauchos' series record with New Mexico now stands at 4-5-1 all-time. This marks just the third time in head coach Tim Vom Steeg's tenure that UCSB has not recorded a win in its first two games of a season. In both 2005 and 2007, the Gauchos opened the season with a loss and a tie in their first two contests.
UCSB will return to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium for its 2010 home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 7 when the Gauchos host Creighton in a 7 p.m. match.
