Durham, N.C. -
The 19th ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team claimed the Duke/adidas Classic by sweeping its competition and having the highest aggregate score when it concluded play by downing the host, 15th ranked Duke, by a 2-1 margin. Junior forward Drew McAthy, for the second consecutive game, netted UCSB's game-winner to improve the Gauchos to 2-0-1 on the season and run their regular season unbeaten streak to nine games.
Both teams went scoreless through the first half of competition, and it wasn't until the 52nd minute that senior midfielders Memo Arzate and David McGill combined on a couple of passes to set up senior forward Neil Jones for the first goal of the match. Taking a pass from right corner, Jones put away a pass from about 10 yards out to give Santa Barbara a 1-0 lead.
Duke then returned the favor not even a minute later, knotting the score up at 1-1, when Chase Perfect lofted a shot over Gaucho goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. Perfect's goal was the first that Kennedy had allowed in over 200 minutes of play.
With the score 1-1 entering the final 20 minutes of regulation, sophomore midfielder Bryan Byrne found McAthy near the top-left of the penalty box. McAthy, who scored a hat-trick in Friday's match against NC State, finished off Byrne's pass to give UCSB a 2-1 lead, and the eventual win.
Kennedy remained undefeated in the pipes this season for Santa Barbara, now having allowed just two goals in 290:00 minutes of play.
McAthy led all UCSB scorers with four goals on the weekend, while Jones and Arzate were second with one goal and two assists each. McGill finished the Classic with three assists, running his Gaucho career total to 18 in just over one season, moving him into the Big West Conference ten best of all-time. Byrne rounded out the scoring, picking up his first career point when he assisted on McAthy's game-winner.
UCSB now returns to Santa Barbara for their home opener next Friday, September 12th against Michigan State. The Gauchos will be unveiling the newly resurfaced Harder Stadium, as well as honoring Head Coach Tim VomSteeg, who picked up his 50th career win at UCSB during last season's NCAA Tournament. Kickoff for Friday's match is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
