Men's Soccer Edges Western Kentucky On The Road, 1-0

Sept. 8, 2000

Box Score

Bowling Green, Ky. - Thiago Martins scored an unassisted goal at the 20:51 mark in the first half and freshman Erik Stolhandske recorded his first shutout as the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team won at Western Kentucky Friday night, 1-0.

For Martins, it was his first goal of the season and, in fact, his first since mid-season last year when he was sidelined with a broken foot. The Gauchos won despite being outshot by the Hilltoppers, 24-15.

Stolhandske was making his first start between the posts, replacing senior Trent Ulicny who was ejected in Sunday's 2-0 loss at San Jose State and was serving his one game suspension. A native of San Antonio, Stolhandske made the most of his opportunity, logging seven saves for the match.

UCSB, which was also playing without last-year's leading goal scorer Jaime Ambriz, who was also red carded at San Jose, is now 2-1 on the season. They return to action on Sunday afternoon when they will close out their road trip to the Blue Grass State with a 1:00 p.m. (CDT) match in Lexington against the University of Kentucky. Western Kentucky drops to 1-1 on the season. The match was the first-ever played at WKU's Soccer Complex.
