Men's Soccer Scores Two Goals In Second Half For Comeback Win At Kentucky, 2-1
Sept. 10, 2000
Lexington, Ky. -
Senior forward Thiago Martins scored on a penalty kick with just over six minutes remaining in the match, to lead UC Santa Barbara to a come-from-behind 2-1 win at the University of Kentucky on Sunday.
Martins' penalty kick goal, which resulted after a Kentucky takedown in the box, was his second game-winning score in the last two matches. On Friday, he scored a first half goal to give the Gauchos a 1-0 win at Western Kentucky. On Sunday, Martins' goal capped a comeback for UCSB. The Gauchos trailed 1-0 entering the final 20 minutes, but at the 74:15 mark, Lucas Dalgleish scored from ten yards out on an assist from Aaron McAthy, knotting the score at 1-1.
UCSB defeated the Wildcats despite being outshot 13-7. Martins, in fact, had five of the Gauchos' seven shots. Ilkka Jantti, who scored Kentucky's only goal off of a free kick from Giovanni Fernandes at the 26:58 mark of the contest, received his second yellow card at the 84:15 mark.
Senior goalkeeper Trent Ulicny recorded the win for the Gauchos. He returned after sitting out one match following an ejection last week. Junior forward Jaime Ambriz also returned following his one game suspension after an ejection.
The victory over Kentucky avenged UCSB's worst loss of the 1999 season. In a tournament at UNLV, the Gauchos dropped a 5-1 decision to the Wildcats in September of 1999. The win gives UCSB a two-match winning streak heading into its Wednesday, September 13 showdown against crosstown rival Westmont College at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos are now 3-1 on the year while Kentucky drops to 2-2.
