After jumping out to a 2-1 at halftime, the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team dropped a 4-2 contest with Oregon State at Harder Stadium on Friday night. The Gauchos move to 3-4 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 4-3.
The Gauchos started early with freshman Darren Doi's cross to sophomore Sean Edwards resulting in the first goal of the match in the 25th minute. Edwards, who made his first start of the season, led the Gauchos with one goal on three shots and one assist in the match. The Beavers struck back in the 29th minute on a Matt Olsen goal to even the score at 1-1. Junior defender Galen Donaldson came off the bench to head in the Gauchos second score of the half which came off an Edwards free kick.
The second half proved to more trying for the Gauchos. Olsen scored his second goal of the match in the 57th minute to tie up the score at 2-2. Two minutes later, Oregon State's Josh Elbaum headed in Gavin Shak's cross to give the Beavers their first lead of the match. In the 65th minute, James Albert shot in a breakaway goal to secure the Beavers victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske got his second start of the season notching two saves, both coming in the first half, while allowing four goals. Stohlhandske, who recorded a shutout in his first start, has a goals allowed average of 1.59.
The Gauchos out shot the Beavers 18-6 in the match, with ten shots coming in the second half. Senior forward Thiago Martins and junior midfielder Lucas Dalgleish each notched three shots for the Gauchos.
UC Santa Barbara heads back into action on Sunday, September 24 against the #1-ranked UCLA Bruins. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Frank W. Marshall Field in Westwood.
