No. 13 Gauchos Open Big West Play With 4-0 Blowout of UC Davis
Sept. 29, 2007
DAVIS, Calif. - Four different players scored goals to lead No.13-ranked UC Santa Barbara to a 4-0 shutout over UC Davis in a Big West men's soccer game in front of a sellout crowd of 1,040 at Aggie Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The match marked the first official Big West contest for the Aggies, who officially joined the Big West this year. The victory improves the Gauchos to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. UC Davis, which was unbeaten in six straight, falls to 5-2-1 overall and1-0 in league play.
Three of the Gauchos' four goals were unassisted strikes. Their first goal came in the 34th minute as Chris Pontius collected a rebound off goalkeeper Brian Wickers for the lone goal of the first half. Pontius pounced on the deflection and pounded a shot into the upper-left corner of the goal. It was his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
UCSB took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute when junior midfielder Eric Avila beat Brian Wickers one on one. Avila took the ball from a Davis defender and maneuvered in front of Wickers. He drilled a shot into the right portion of the goal.
The Gauchos continued the onslaught when Jon Curry, a native of nearby Sacramento, scored on a direct kick from the top of the box. The final goal came when Martin Hedevag took a cross from Tony Chinakwe and blasted home a shot with just two seconds remaining on the clock. The goal was Hedevag's second of the season in a total of about six minutes of action.
In what turned out to be an extremely physical match, a total of 28 fouls were whistled along with four yellow cards. Each team held identical fouls and yellow card totals to go with their matching shot totals.
UCSB will resume Big West play on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when it hosts UC Irvine in an 8:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. The contest will be carried on Fox Soccer Channel. The Gauchos and Anteaters battled for the league crown in 2006 and will likely do so again in 2007.
