Box Score

SAN LUIS OBiSPO, Calif. - Tyler Rosenlund connected with Eric Avila for the game-winner early in the first period and then found Bongomin Otti less than a minute later, as the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team defeated its Central Coast rival Cal Poly 2-0 in a Big West Conference match up Saturday night at Mustang Stadium. Rosenlund, who missed the first eight games of the season due to injury, got into the scoring column for the first time with the two assists.

With the victory, UCSB swept the season series from Cal Poly and extended its winning streak over the Mustangs to 12 games. The Gauchos improved to 8-6-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Big West, while the Poly fell to 6-6-3 (2-3-1 Big West) with the loss.

Santa Barbara pushed through with its first goal in over 120 minutes of play at the 11:21 mark. Midfielder Rosenlund played a ball through the middle for fellow midfielder Avila, who sent the ball past a diving Mustang goalkeeper Eric Branagan-Franco for the game-winner and his third goal of the season.

Rosenlund picked up his second assist of the night 37 seconds later when he broke through the Cal Poly defense and fed a fast break ball to Otti. Otti entered the box and kicked a ball by Branagan-Franco for the final 2-0 advantage. The goal was Otti's team-high sixth of the season and first since he scored in the Gaucho's 2-1 loss to the University of Illinois at Chicago September 8.

Cal Poly out-shot Santa Barbara 15-8 for the match, recording 10 shots on frame to the Gauchos' three. The Mustangs also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Kyle Reynish was tremendous for UCSB between the posts, tallying a season-high eight saves. He made several key stops late to preserve his seventh shutout of the season, including tipping the ball just over the crossbar on KJ Lenihan's shot from the left side. Branagan-Franco recorded one save for the Mustangs.

"This was a game we had to have and we went out and got it," head coach Tim Vom Steeg said. "Tyler played great and we got goals from a couple guys that we haven't heard from offensively in a while, so I'm pleased with what we did tonight."

UCSB returns home next week for a match up with UC Davis Wednesday, October 18. The Gauchos will then welcome Cal State Fullerton to Harder Stadium Saturday, October 21. Both contests are slated to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
