DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Nic Ryan scored his first career goal in the 52nd minute to help lead No. 18 UC Santa Barbara to a 2-0 victory over UC Davis at Aggie Stadium on Wednesday evening in a Big West Conference match.
With the win, UCSB improves to 9-3-2 on the year and to 5-1 in Big West games. The Aggies fall to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in league contests. The win was the Gauchos' sixth straight and ninth in the last 10 matches.
The game-winning play began when Ryan received a cross from James Kiffe that he headed toward the Davis goal. Goalkeeper Omar Zeenni blocked the shot, but failed to secure the loose ball and Ryan one-touched the ball into the right side of the goal for the winning strike.
UC Davis had a chance to equalize the game in the 68th minute when Alex Aguiar crossed the ball to Alex Henry who had a wide-open shot that went just high of the Gaucho goal.
Then, in the 74th minute, Henry crossed the ball to Lance Patterson on an Aggie corner kick. Patterson shot the ball but Danny Barrera deflected it out from the right post.
With less than five minutes to play, the Gauchos added an insurance goal when Luis Silva collected a ball that had deflected off of a UC Davis player and beat Aggie goalkeeper Omar Zeenni, who had come out of the goal, with a low shot to the left corner.
UCSB out-shot the Aggies, 7-2, in the first half, but had just two shots on-frame during the opening period.
The Gauchos' first legitimate scoring opportunity in the first half came in the 35th minute when Sam Garza shot the ball to the far side of the goal from the right side of the box. Zeenni dove right and deflected the ball out with one hand.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, Dan Reese received a through ball on an Aggie counterattack and shot the ball as Gaucho goalkeeper Sam Hayden left the goal, but the ball deflected off the left crossbar to preserve the scoreless tie heading into halftime.
For the game, UCSB out-shot the Aggies, 13-6, with six shots on-frame. Ryan and Garza each had three shots to lead the team. In goal, Hayden made one save on his way to his 21st career shutout.
The Gauchos did not come out of the game completely unscathed as junior defender Chris Hunter picked up a red card with just 22 seconds to go. The starter will now have to sit out UCSB's next match.
The Gauchos will continue Big West play on Saturday when they return home to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium to host Cal State Northridge. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
