Santa Barbara, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara's men's soccer team ended a three match losing streak on Sunday evening with their 1-1 tie with San Diego State. The Gauchos improve to 6-9-1 overall and post a 1-3-1 mark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
The Gauchos took control of the match early when senior forward Thiago Martins launched a penalty kick past Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes to give UCSB the 1-0 lead. Through out the first half of action, the Gauchos out shot the Aztecs 6-2. Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske posted two of his five saves in the period.
UCSB kept San Diego State off the scoreboard through out 74 minutes of play. Aztec midfielder Enrique Tovar found the back of the net off a pass from Ronnie Silva to tie the match 1-1. In the final minutes of regulation, UCSB had a few great opportunites to take the lead. Oncewhen midfielder Darren Doi's shot skimmed the top of the net in the 84th minute and when junior forward Joe Hubay-Dies sent his shot wide right with 1:30 remaining.
Despite being unable to capitalize on their offensive chances, the Gauchos played tough defense through out the overtime periods to earn the victory. UCSB kept another of Tovar's team-leading nine shots from finding the net in the 101st minute. The Aztecs did not have another shot in the contest. Martins did, however, have one more shot for the win when his shot in the final minute was deflected out of the net by SDSU's Tovar.
The match marks the final home match for UCSB this season. Seniors A.J. Albertalli, Robert Drescher, Lucas Dalgleish and Martins played in Harder Stadium for the final time as a Gaucho.
UCSB returns to action on Thursday, October 26th for a non-conference match-up at Fresno State. The Gauchos will return to MPSF play on Sunday, October 29th for a 2:00 p.m. with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
