SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Irvine midfielder Chris Klotz shoved home a cross from Anthony Hamilton in the 74th-minute and the Anteaters (6-8-0 overall, 2-3-0 in the Big West) made it hold up, defeating second-ranked UC Santa Barbara (11-2-1 overall, 4-2-0 in the Big West) in a Big West soccer match on Thursday night in Santa Barbara.

The only goal of the match came at the 73:24 mark when Hamilton dribbled the ball up the left sideline and beat a Gaucho defender to create a 2-on-1 with Klotz. Just above the penalty box, Hamilton drove into the middle of the field to draw the final defender to him and passed the ball to Klotz who was coming down the center of the field. Klotz one-timed the shot past UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Reynish, who was playing in playing in place of the team's regular starter, Dan Kennedy.

Neither team had many true scoring opportunities. The Gauchos had just nine shots and the Anteaters produced just six. UCI goalkeeper Cameron Rossi needed just one save to hand UCSB its second straight loss.

Santa Barbara did come close once in the waning minutes when senior Nate Boyden's corner kick was headed by senior Drew McAthy past Rossi. The ball looked ready to creep over the goal line but it was cleared at the last second by an Irvine defender.

UCSB failed to take advantage of a 12-2 corner kick advantage in the match. It marked the first time this season that the Gauchos were shutout, and it was the second year in a row that UCI had upset Santa Barbara on its home turf.

The second-ranked Gauchos which lost their first match of the season last Saturday, 3-1 at Cal State Northridge, will return to action on Sunday evening when they host Cal Poly in a 5:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. The match against the Mustangs was originally slated to be played on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m., but was rescheduled after tonight's match against UCI was moved from Wednesday night to Thursday night due to unplayable conditions.

The Gaucho men's match on Sunday evening will be followed by a Big West women's match between Cal State Northridge and UCSB.
