Gauchos Bury Visiting New Mexico In MPSF Contest
Oct. 22, 1999
Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB used a brilliant offensive performance from junior forward Sean Herrity to bury the visiting Lobos in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday night. Herrity scored the game's first goal when he converted on a penalty kick in the 28th minute. UCSB's A.J. Albertalli was red carded early in the second half, forcing the Gauchos to play one man down. That did not stop Herrity. Two minutes later, he scored on a corner kick. Three minutes after that, he scored his third goal of the game when his shot was deflected by a New Mexico header off the crossbar and into the goal.
Herrity spent the 1996 and 1997 seasons as a reserve forward at New Mexico. The Simi Valley native was awarded a medical redshirt last season, after tearing his ACL in the Gauchos' fourth match. The hat trick was UCSB's first since the 1996 season. The goals were his fifth, sixth and seventh of the season.
New Mexico's Hank Schwyzer was red carded in the 87th minute, putting the teams at even strength. The Gauchos added their fourth goal in the 88th minute when Justin Waldrop tapped in a Lucas Dalgleish pass at the far post.
Senior goalkeeper Stewart Sanders earned the shutout in the contest. The blanking was his sixth of the season and the 13th of his career.
With the win, UCSB improved to 10-5-0, 3-2-0 in MPSF play. The win also assures the Gauchos their first .500 season since 1995. The conference win total also exceeds the combined MPSF win total of UCSB's teams of the last three seasons. New Mexico dropped to 6-8-0, 1-2-0 MPSF.
