McAthy Sets New All-Time Goal Scoring Record as Gauchos Shutout Cal State Fullerton 1-0
Oct. 30, 2004
Fullerton, Calif. -
Sometimes it takes just one, as was the case tonight for the sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team who shutout Cal State Fullerton 1-0 to improve to 13-2-1 on the season and 6-2-0 in Big West play. Senior forward Drew McAthy netted the Gauchos' lone goal to set himself apart as UCSB's all-time goal scoring record holder with his 47th of his career.
Although it was McAthy's record-setting goal that stole the show, it was the Gaucho defense of Tony Lochhead, Andy Iro and Pat Scott that was key in UCSB's victory, limiting the Titans to just two shots on the night. Senior goalkeeper Dan Kennedy made his return to the Gauchos' starting lineup tonight after a two week layoff due to injury, posting his eighth complete game shutout of the season in the process. Thanks to the effort of the defensive unit as a whole, Kennedy did not have to make a single save to record the shutout, marking the second consecutive game that the UCSB defense held the opposition to zero shots on goal.
In the 27th minute McAthy carried the ball into the box and nutmegged his defender creating an almost certain goal scoring opportunity, as a result the defender choose to jump on the ball, earning the new all-time Gaucho goal scoring record holder his penalty kick. McAthy converted the free shot for second in as many tries this season.
UCSB now returns home to host UC Davis and Stanford next week. The Gauchos will face the Aggies on Thursday, November 4th and the Cardinal on Saturday, November 6th. Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday's match against Stanford the UCSB Athletic Department will be offering 2-for-1 admission for all attending the match, with a coupon available on www.ucsbgauchos.com.
