Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara scored two goals in the first 25 minutes of play to earn a 3-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon. The Gauchos improve to 8-9-1, 2-3-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.
The Matadors took an early lead when Charles Mtchell scored his fifth goal of the season in the 14th minute. However, the lead was short lived when senior forward Thiago Martins found the net in the 17th minute. Martins goal was his sixth on the year, moving him into UCSB's leading scorer position. The Gauchos struck again in the 25th minute, when Joe Hubay-Dies scored off a Steven Sosa pass to put the Gauchos ahead 2-1. Sosa recorded two assists in the contest, also assisting on Martin's goal.
UCSB played strong through out the second half holding the Matadors to only one shot in the period. The Gauchos out-shot Cal State Northridge 13-6 in the contest. With 36 seconds left in the match, sophomore midfielder Sean Edwards blasted a free kick past the defenders to seal the Gaucho's victory. Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske recorded two saves in the contest.
The Gauchos will conclude their season on Tuesday night when they travel to Cal Poly for a make-up match. The match will wrap up UCSB's conference and regular season schedules.
