Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior David Walker's goal in the 44th minute propelled No. 5 UC Santa Barbara to a 1-0 win at San Diego (12-6-2) in a NCAA Second Round game at Torero Stadium on Sunday evening.

With the win, UCSB improves to 17-4-2 on the season, marking the most wins by the program since the 2006 National Championship team recorded a 17-7-1 overall record. The shutout marked the Gauchos' 16th of the season, surpassing the program and Big West conference record of 15 shutouts, set by the 2004 squad.

San Diego had three early scoring opportunities in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Tim Grey received a cross in the area off a Torero corner kick. Grey shot the ball to right post, but Danny Barrera was there waiting and blocked the potential USD goal.

Just a few minutes later, the Toreros had another chance when Trevor May struck from 28 yards out, but Sam Hayden easily grabbed the save. Hayden stopped another shot by James Cohn in the 24th minute with a diving save, keeping USD off the scoreboard during the half.

With just two minutes remaining in the half, Luis Silva won a 50-50 pass at midfield and passed the ball forward to Barrera. The sophomore played the ball over the USD defense to David Walker who trapped the ball with his head before firing a shot to the bottom left corner of the Torero goal, giving UCSB a 1-0 lead.

Walker's goal was scored on the first Gaucho shot of the game. It also broke the Gauchos' streak of six consecutive games without a goal in the first half. It was Walker's ninth goal of the year and his second in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

USD had a chance at an equalizer in the waning seconds of the first half when the ball was played into the area and deflected right to the waiting right foot of Charles Blasé, he shot the ball to left side just after the clock expired.

In the second half, the roles reversed as the Gauchos out-shot the Toreros, 5-1. UCSB controlled the momentum during the final 45 minutes of the game and only faced one shot, two corners and two free kicks in the half.

The Gauchos will play UCLA in the Third Round at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29 in Brentwood.
