Men's Soccer's Turnaround Rated Best In NCAA Division I
Jan. 18, 2000
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UCSB men's soccer team received some good news Tuesday, as the NCAA announced the team's 10.5-game turnaround from 1998 to 1999 was the best among NCAA Division I schools last season. The Gauchos went 13-7-0 in 1999, the team's best record since 1988. That followed a 2-17-1 1998 campaign, the worst in school history.
The improvement was enough to rate first-year head coach Tim Vom Steeg as Co-Coach of the Year in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Pacific Division. Vom Steeg played soccer at UCSB from 1985-88.
The Gauchos also posted a 4-3-0 mark in MPSF play, twice its combined conference win total of the last two seasons. UCSB had not won four or more conference games since it last made the MPSF playoffs in 1995.
