SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After winning its first national championship in December, the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team will be recognized by the President of the United States at the White House in Washington D.C. Monday June 18.
The Gauchos are one of 28 NCAA Division I National Championship teams that have been invited to the nation's capitol for a photo opportunity with President George W. Bush during National Champions' Day. UCSB's travel party departs for Washington D.C. Sunday evening and will visit the White House Monday afternoon. The Gauchos will then tour the city before returning to Santa Barbara Tuesday night.
"Obviously we are extremely excited," head coach Tim Vom Steeg said. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our players and we are honored to get the chance to meet President Bush."
Director of Athletics Gary Cunningham, who will be making the trip with the team, echoed that sentiment. "We are honored and thrilled that the president is willing to take time out of his schedule to meet not only with our players, but several other NCAA Division I athletes, as well," he said. "This will definitely be a great experience and lifetime memory for our student athletes and coaches."
