SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In its annual Preseason Top 30 National Poll, College Soccer News has ranked UC Santa Barbara as the No. 6 team in the nation and the top team from the West. CSN also listed junior midfielder Danny Barrera on its 2010 Second Team Preseason All-American list.
The Gauchos return nine starters from the 2009 squad that went 17-5-2 and advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament. Highlighting the list of UCSB returners are Barrera, the Big West Midfielder of the Year; Sam Hayden, the Big West Goalkeeper of the Year; and All-Far West selections Luis Silva and Michael Tetteh. All-Big West picks Michael Boxall, Machael David, Michael Nonni and Waid Ibrahim also all return for the 2010 campaign.
UCSB has added 11 newcomers to the roster in addition to redshirts Evan McNeil and Chris Hunter. CSN had previously rated the 2010 recruiting class as a four star recruiting class out of a possible five stars.
Akron was selected as the No. 1 team in the CSN poll with North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Tulsa rounding out the top-five, respectively.
UCSB is the highest ranked team from the West topping No. 8 UCLA, No. 14 Stanford, No. 20 UC Irvine and No. 28 Sacramento State. To view the complete Top 30 poll, click here.
Barrera earns his Second Team Preseason All-American honor after earning All-Far West and All-Big West accolades in 2009. The midfielder started all 24 games last year and scored five goals and led the team with nine assists. His 19 points are the most among returning players.
The 2010 season opens in just two weeks when the Gauchos host Westmont in an exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 21 on the newly resurfaced Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
Season tickets for the 2010 soccer season are now available. All season ticket packages include tickets for the 2010 Men's College Cup, which is being hosted by UCSB on Dec. 10-12 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Individual season tickets start at just $75 and include one ticket to all home men and women's regular season games and one 2010 Men's College Cup all-session ticket. UCSB staff and faculty can purchase their season tickets for a reduced rate of $50.
