BEIJING, China - UCSB defender Michael Boxall played all 90 minutes Sunday as New Zealand was blanked, 5-0, by a stacked Brazilian squad in Olympic men's soccer action in Beijing.
Superstar Ronaldinho netted two goals, while Alexandre Pato, Anderson, and Rafael Sobis also scored on the Shenyang Stadium pitch.
The Brazilians wasted no time getting on the board as Anderson, a Manchester United forward, opened the scoring just three minutes into the match. Pato, an AC Milan teammate of Ronaldinho's, put Brazil up 2-0 in the 34th minute. Ronaldinho tallied his first in the 55th minute and got his second on a penalty kick in the 61st. Sobis rounded out the scoring during injury time.
New Zealand dropped to 0-1-1 in Group C as it tied host China, 1-1, in its opening match Thursday. Brazil leads the group at 2-0, while Belgium is 1-0-1 and China is 0-1-1.
The Oly-Whites must defeat Belgium Wednesday to have a chance at finishing second in the group and advancing.
Interestingly enough, Brazil has never won an Olympic gold medal.
