Gauchos Picked to Win 2010 Big West Title in Annual Coaches Poll

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

UC Santa Barbara was picked to win the 2010 Big West men's soccer title in a vote of the conference's seven head coaches it was announced today. The Gauchos topped the preseason poll with a total of 48 points, which included six first place votes.

The 2010 season has potential to be an exciting one for the Gauchos, who return nine starters from the 2009 squad that won the Big West regular season championship, advanced to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament and posted a 17-5-2 overall record.

Among the Gaucho returnees are 2009 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Sam Hayden, Big West Midfielder of the Year Danny Barrera and Big West Freshman of the Year Machael David. All-Big West selections Luis Silva, Michael Boxall, Michael Nonni, Michael Tetteh and Waid Ibrahim also all return for the 2010 campaign.

The Gauchos have also been ranked as one of the top teams nationally, ranking sixth in the College Soccer News preseason poll and No. 8 in the NSCAA preseason poll.

UC Irvine is ranked second in the Big West poll with 43 points and the remaining first place vote. The Anteaters went 15-7-0 in 2009 and won the Big West Conference Tournament title. Coming in third was Cal Poly, which garnered 28 points, just beating out Cal State Northridge, which collected 27 points.

Cal State Fullerton (22 points), UC Davis (17 points) and UC Riverside (11 points) rounded out the poll.

The Gauchos open the 2010 season this Saturday when they host Westmont in an exhibition match on the newly resurfaced Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Santa Barbara's Big West Conference opener will be on Sept. 29 when they travel to Cal State Fullerton.

Season tickets for the 2010 soccer season are now available. All season ticket packages include tickets for the 2010 Men's College Cup, which is being hosted by UCSB on Dec. 10-12 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Individual season tickets start at just $75 and include one ticket to all home men and women's regular season games and one 2010 Men's College Cup all-session ticket. UCSB staff and faculty can purchase their season tickets for a reduced rate of $50.
