Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore midfielder Tyler Rosenlund has been named to the 2005 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch list, it was announced late yesterday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Rosenlund becomes the first player in UCSB men's soccer history to be named to the 25-man list that will eventually determine the NCAA Division I Player of the Year.
A Freshman All-American in 2004, Rosenlund was just one of five sophomores to make the prestigious list. He was also just one of five players from a University located west of the Mississippi to be named.
"I am really honored and excited to be named to the list. And to be honest a little surprised," said Rosenlund. "It means that people have high expectations for me and that I need to do my part and play well."
Rosenlund is coming off a summer in which he played for Canada's Under-20 National Team at the World Youth Championships, increasing his international cap total to 16 at the U-20 level. He has started all 16 of those matches.
"This is a great accomplishment for Tyler and for the program," said seventh-year head coach Tim Vom Steeg. "As [the UCSB men's soccer program's] success has increased in the recent years it has allowed us to bring in continuously better players and Tyler making this Hermann Watch List is an example that, especially as a sophomore."
The list of 25 players will be decreased in early November to 15 semifinalists based upon each of the players' season performances up to that point. The list of 15 semifinalists will then decrease to three finalists near the end of the NCAA Tournament. The winner, which is determined by a panel of Division I head coaches, will be announced on January 6th at a special dinner and news conference held at the Missouri Athletic Club.
The Hermann Trophy was won last year by Indiana's Danny O'Rourke and is considered to be the equivalent of college basketball's Wooden Award and college football's Heisman Trophy.
Rosenlund and the rest of the fourth-ranked Gauchos begin preseason play this Saturday, August 27th against crosstown rival Westmont College in the 43rd Annual Bryant & Sons Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the newly redeveloped Harder Stadium.
