SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior forward David Walker was named UCSBgauchos.com Athlete of the Week after receiving tournament MVP honors at last weekend's West Virginia University/Nike Classic.
Walker scored a trio of goals for the Gauchos as UCSB went 3-0 to start the 2009 season. His first goal came in the tournament opener over host West Virginia on Friday, which the Gauchos won, 2-0.
The senior followed up that showing with the first two-goal performance of his collegiate career in the 4-3 win over Pitt, including a goal in the 86th minute that tied the game, sending the contest into overtime.
Between the Gauchos' three games last week, Walker recorded three goals on nine shots (seven of which were on-goal), already matching his goal total from the 2008 season.
In addition to his MVP honor, Walker was also named to TopDrawerSoccer.com Men's Team of the Week.
Walker and the Gauchos return home this week to host Rutgers in a nationally televised match on Friday. The Gauchos and Scarlet Knights will face-off on Friday, Sept. 11 at 8 pm at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. The game will air live on Fox Soccer Channel.
