Santa Barbara, Calif. -
With both of No. 25 UC Santa Barbara's game-winning goals this past week, sophomore forward Drew McAthy has been recognized as the Big West Men's Soccer Player of the Week. An All-Big West Honorable Mention last season, this week's honor is the first time he has been tabbed as the Player of the Week in his young career.
McAthy's first game-winning goal came with less than four possible minutes remaining in the Gauchos' 3-2 sudden victory overtime win over Michigan State. His second game-winning goal was the first of six UCSB shots to find the back of the net in its 6-0 rout of St. Mary's this past weekend.
Currently, McAthy is tied for third in the Big West with 6 total points and sits alone in third with a 2.00 goals per game average. McAthy and fellow forward, senior Rob Friend, have each scored a goal in each of the Gauchos' three games, putting the two forwards in a tie for second place in the Big West in goals and goals per game. The top goal scorer in the Big West thus far is UCSB midfielder Dan Young, who holds the top spot with four goals in three games.
Twice last season a Gaucho was named the conference's player of the week, both times the honor was awarded to Rob Friend.
