Gauchos Take First Match at WKU's Soccer Complex
In the first match played at Western Kentucky's new Soccer Complex, the Gauchos edged the Hilltoppers 1-0 on Friday night in Bowling Green Ky. The game winning goal came from senior forward Thiago Martins in the 20th minute of the match. Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske, in his first start as a Gaucho, earned a complete game shutout. He recorded seven saves on the day.
Martins Scores Penalty Kick Goal In 85th Minute For Victory
UC Santa Barbara earned their third victory of the season with a 2-1 win over the University of Kentucky Wildcats Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Ky. Senior midfielder Lucas Dalgleish scored the first Gaucho goal in the 74th minute to tie the game at 1-1. In the 85th minute, senior forward Thiago Martins scored the game winning tally on a penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Trent Ulicny returned to goal after sitting out one match due to a red card ejection. He notched three saves in the contest.
Gauchos Head Into Battle With Westmont
Wednesday night will mark the latest in a series of heated battles with UCSB's crosstown rivals, the Westmont Warriors. In the previous 37 meetings with the Warriors, UCSB has posted a 11-22-4 record. In last season's matchup, the Gauchos pulled off an exciting victory when Lucas Dalgleish's goal rolled into the net as the horn blew to sound the end of the game. The victory snapped a three year losing streak for the Gauchos.. Wednesday night the Gauchos will try to take two in a row from the NAIA powerhouse.
Martins Comes Alive
Senior forward Thiago Martins started this season slowly, shooting only five shots over the course of two games and going scoreless in both. However, this weekend's trip to the Bluegrass State revitalized the Sao Paolo native. Martins scored game winning goals in both of this weekend's matches, including an 85th minute goal off a penalty kick to lead the Gauchos over Kentucky. Sunday, Martins attempted five of the Gaucho's seven shots in Sunday's match. He ia also tied four the team scoring lead at four points with junior forward Jaime Ambriz.
Stolhandske Shuts Down Western Kentucky
Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske recorded his first shutout as a Gaucho in Friday night's match at Western Kentucky. The San Antonio native replaced Trent Ulicny after his red-card ejection in the 43rd minute of the September 3rd at San Jose State. Ulicny was also forced to sit out Friday's match for the ejection. Stolhandske has posted 12 saves in his 136 minutes played and notched a 0.00 goals against average.
