Gauchos Shutout, 2-0, by Crosstown Rivals

After last season's last second loss to UCSB, Westmont College was ready to avenge their defeat on Wednesday night at Harder Stadium. The Warriors started early with a Mark Stephens goal in the 20th minute. A Westmont penalty kick in the 80th minute gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead. The Gauchos struggled to ignite their offense and were outshot by the Warriors 7-10. The Gauchos and the Warriors combined to tally 51 fouls during the match, while the Gauchos were charged with four yellow cards and a red-card ejection to midfielder Matt Kubota. Goalkeeper Trent Ulicny recorded three saves in the contest.


UCSB Falls to Cal, 3-1

UC Santa Barbara leveled their record to 3-3 with Sunday's 3-1 loss to the University of California. The Gauchos jumped out to an early lead when freshman forward Gene Deering headed a goal past Cal's Marco Palmievi in the third minute. Cal struck back in the 19th minute on a Chris Roner goal. Both teams were held scorelss until the 72nd minute, when Roner notched his second goal of the match. Cal topped off their victory with their third goal, which came in the 87th minute. The Gauchos outshot the Golden Bears 15-13, while goalkeeper Trent Ulicny recorded five saves.


Gauchos Head Into Battle With UCLA

The Gauchos will take on #1-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles on Sunday. UCSB last played the top-ranked team in the nation in 1997 when they faced, then MPSF foe UCLA at Harder Stadium.


Defensive Star Out For the Season

The Gauchos had more to fear than a loss on their record in Sunday's game at Cal when co-captain A.J. Albertalli was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. The Fremont native suffered mulitple facial fractures and a concussion after a collision with a Cal player after a corner kick. The injury will force Albertalli to miss the rest of the season . Albertalli,a three-year starter, had only missed six minutes of the Gauchos matches this season. He had earned a total of two points on the season which came from on 85th minute goal in the Gaucho's first match of the season against Valparaiso.


Martins Sidelined by Concussion

Wednesday's match aganist Westmont was not free of injury either. Senior forward Thiago Martins suffered a concussion in the 19th minute of Wednesday night's match against Westmont. He missed the remainder of the match along with Sunday's match at Cal. Martins, who will b re-evaluated on Wednesday, is probable for this weekend's matches. The Sao Paolo native leads the team in scoring with four points so far this season.
