SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior goalkeeper Sam Hayden and freshman forward David Opoku each garnered a pair of weekly honors for their parts in helping lead the UC Santa Barbara soccer team to its first wins of the season over the weekend at the Lobo Classic, which was hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Hayden was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and was picked as the Big West Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after posting two shutouts for the Gauchos. Hayden made five saves in each of the weekend's matches: a 2-0 win over No. 6 Harvard and a 4-0 victory over Buffalo. He was also named the Lobo Classic Defensive MVP.
The Big West Defensive Player of the Week honor was the first weekly conference honor of Hayden's career. This marks the second time that he has received National Team of the Week recognition from College Soccer News, the first was on Oct. 26, 2009.
Opoku was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week and also named UCSBgauchos.com Gaucho of the Week after leading UCSB for points over the weekend. The freshman scored his first career goal in the 87th minute against No. 6 Harvard on Friday and then scored his second against Buffalo in the 27th minute on Sunday. He also assisted Sam Garza's goal in the 66th minute against the Bulls to tally five points during the tournament. Opoku earned All-Tournament honors as well at the Lobo Classic.
Hayden and Opoku will be back in action with the rest of the Gauchos on Friday, Sept. 24 when UCSB hosts No. 7 UCLA at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. All the action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
