SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara senior forward Chris Pontius was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week, a national team made up of the top collegiate players each week during the season.
Pontius led the Gauchos with three goals as UCSB went 1-1 last week, defeating Evansville last Thursday before falling to Wake Forest on Sunday. Pontius scored twice in the 4-2 victory over Evansville and bent in a free kick during Santa Barbara's loss on Sunday.
Pontius leads the team with six goals this season after he scored a team-high 11 last season en route to being named the Big West Offensive Player of the Year. A co-captain, Pontius is on the Hermann Trophy watch list.
He is the second Gaucho to be honored in a national weekly Team of the Week after defender Michael Boxall was named to Top Drawer's Team of the Week for the week ending September 8, which followed victories over Kentucky and Loyola Marymount.
Also available on www.topdrawersoccer.com, under the site's college page, is an interview with Pontius, as well as a previous interview from earlier this season with Head Coach Tim Vom Steeg.
UCSB (4-3-0) travels to face Indiana this Saturday in a re-match of the 2004 NCAA title game, which the Hoosiers won in a penalty kick shootout.
