Gauchos Head Into MPSF Play
This weekend's matches against UNLV and New Mexico mark the Gaucho's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season. UNLV enters their match with the Gauchos 1-0 in MPSF play, their victory coming over Cal Poly. On Sunday, UCSB faces New Mexico, who are 2-7 overall, 0-1 in MPSF action. Their conference loss came at the hands of the Mustangs.
Gauchos Edged 1-0 By LMU in Overtime
Returning home on Tuesday night, UCSB dropped their fifth match in a row in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Loyola Marymount. Throughout 118 minutes of play, UC Santa Barbara held Loyola Marymount scoreless. However, with only two minutes remaining in the second sudden victory overtime period, LMU's Arturo Torres scored the match's only goal and handed the Gauchos their fifth consecutive loss. The Gauchos did outshoot the Lions 17-12 in the contest, including a penalty kick by senior forward Thiago Martins in the 61st minute that sailed wide right.
UCSB Knocks off Centenary, 2-0
UCSB ended their winless drought in Friday night's 2-0 victory over Centenary College of Shreveport, LA. In the 28th minute, freshman midfielder Matt Kubota posted the Gaucho's first goal in 208 minutes. With that under their belt, UCSB's Thiago Martins found the back of the net after a Sean Edwards pass. The Gauchos outshot the Gents 26-9, 16-2 in the first half.
Gauchos Shutout Sac State, 6-0
On the heels of a five game losing streak, the Gauchos turned their streak into one of shutouts, earning their second straight in a 6-0 victory over the visiting Sacramento State Hornets. Junior Jaime Ambriz posted two goals within a minute of each other in the first half, grabbing the team lead in goals with five. Leading 3-0 at the half, the Gauchos struck in the 66th minute off a Thiago Martins shot inside the box. Junior Anthony Dimech posted his first goal of the year, while Lucas Dalgleish shot in the Gaucho's sixth score of the contest as time expired. UCSB outshot Sac State 16-7, marking the third consecutive match where they have outshot their opponent.
Stolhandske Takes Over Starting Position
Freshman goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske saw his first collegiate minutes when he replaced Trent Ulicny after his red card at Kentucky. Six starts later, Stolhandske has recorded three shutouts and 28 saves,. The San Antonio, TX native has posted a 1.03 goals allowed average in his 614 minutes of playing time.
Reserves to the Rescue
Sophomore Sean Edwards and freshman Darren Doi have come off the bench and into the spotlight in the Gauchos last two matches. Edwards, a graduate of Santa Barbara High School, has scored one goal and recorded two assists in the matches. Doi has taken on the duties of the team's corner kicks. Over the course of the weekend, Doi notched three assists, placing him sixth in the Gaucho point count.
