UCSB's Bout With No. 7 UCLA To Be Televised By FSC
Oct. 3, 2006
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 28th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team will battle No. 7 UCLA in a Far West Regional showdown this Thursday, October 5 at Harder Stadium. The match will be broadcast live nationally by the Fox Soccer Channel as part of its 20-game live and exclusive NSCAA College Match of the Week package.
Thursday's match is part of the Fox Soccer Channel's lineup that will include 12 men's matches and six women's matches in 2006 and as a result of an agreement with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America finalized this summer.
"This is an excellent opportunity for our program," head coach Tim Vom Steeg said. "Any time you can compete with a perennial power like UCLA and get the exposure of national television, you have to be grateful for the chance to show what your program is all about."
To accommodate the television broadcast, the Gauchos and Bruins will kickoff at 8:00 p.m., instead of the regular 7:00 p.m. start time of most UCSB home games.
In addition to this week's match-up with UCLA, Santa Barbara will showcase its talent on national television later this season when Big West Conference rival Cal State Northridge comes to town. College Sports Television (CSTV) will broadcast the match for the second year in a row. Last season the Gauchos and Matadors battled to a 2-2 overtime tie October 8 with the CSTV cameras rolling.
In a continuing effort to set the NCAA single season attendance record, the men's soccer program, along with the UCSB marketing department, will be running several promotions for the UCLA match. Thursday is "Blue Out Night" at Harder Stadium and every fan wearing blue will be issued a voucher for $1 off the price of admission.
UCSB's three game homestand continues later this week when the Gauchos take on Big West Conference-leading UC Irvine Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The first 1000 fans in attendance will receive a free player poster.
