Nick Perera Named Big West Player of the Week
Oct. 9, 2006
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara sophomore forward Nick Perera was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the week ending October 8, it was announced today. Perera scored both of the Gauchos' goals in a 2-0 defeat over No. 15 UC Irvine on Saturday and led the team with four shots against No. 7 UCLA last Wednesday.
The native of Madrid, Spain scored his second game-winning goal of the season in the 15th minute against the Anteaters when he took a deflected ball in the box, crossed over splitting two defenders, and sliced the ball past the keeper to put the Gauchos up for good. In the second half, Perera put the game out of reach when he cleared a ball out to midfielder Eric Frimpong and then got it back in the box for the easy score and the final 2-0 advantage at the 68:19 mark.
The victory put Santa Barbara back on top of the Big West standings with nine points at 3-1-0.
Perera also got the nod up front in UCSB's nationally televised match against UCLA last week and led the way offensively with four shots in the 3-1 loss. He had an excellent opportunity to tie the game at 2-2 in the second half, but Bruin goalkeeper Brian Perk made a diving save to deny the shot.
This is Perera's first-career Player of the Week award and the first for a Gaucho this season. UCSB secured the Big West's weekly honor three times in 2005.
Big West play continues for Perera and the Gauchos this week with road match ups against UC Riverside and Cal Poly. UCSB will take on the Highlanders Wednesday, October 11 at 3:00 p.m. and then travel to Central Coast rival Cal Poly next Saturday, October 14 for a 7:00 p.m. match.
