SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 15 UC Santa Barbara freshman midfielder Eric Avila was named the Big West Conference's Co-Player of the Week today after scoring the game-winner against UC Davis and assisting on the game-winner in the Gauchos' contest with Cal State Fullerton last week. Avila shares the award with UC Irvine's Andrew Hamilton, who scored three times against Cal Poly.
The San Diego native scored his second-consecutive game-winning goal against the Aggies, on a 30-yard strike with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime period, sealing the 3-2 win over future Big West member UC Davis. Avila followed that performance with a perfect set-up to senior forward Ivan Becerra, who beat his defender and scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season to break the scoreless tie with Cal State Fullerton three minutes into the second half. UCSB went on to win 2-0.
This is Avila's first career Player of the Week award and marks the second time this season a Gaucho has received the honor. Becerra won the award after netting two goals against UC Riverside September 18.
The U.S. Under-17 National Team standout was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for his efforts while Becerra was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team this week.
Avila and the Gauchos return to action this Wednesday, November 2 when they travel to Cal State Northridge for a critical Big West Conference match at 2:00 p
