Drew McAthy's Record Setting Goal Earns Him Both National and Conference Honors

Nov. 1, 2004

Santa Barbara, Calif. - With his record setting 47th career goal this past weekend, UC Santa Barbara forward Drew McAthy earned this week's Big West Player of the Week honors in addition to being named to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week. The senior from Huntington Beach, Calif. broke sixth-ranked UCSB's all-time goal scoring record in the Gauchos' 1-0 win at Cal State Fullerton, surpassing Scott Grassinger's 21-year old mark of 46.

The conference honors are the first of the season for McAthy, who current sits tied for 16th in NCAA Division I averaging 0.75 goals per game (12 G/16 M), and sixth this year for UCSB. In his stellar four-year career, the three-time all-conference selection has earned the Big West's weekly honor on three different occasions.

With his appearance this week on CSN's National Team of the Week, it marks the fifth time this season that a Gaucho has been represented on CSN's weekly team, putting McAthy alongside fellow forward Neil Jones, defender Tony Lochhead, and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy who has been recognized twice. The senior has made one other appearance on CSN's squad in his career, earning the honor last season with 4 goals alongside a tournament MVP award at the Duke adidas Classic.

McAthy and the rest of his UCSB teammates entered last weekend ranked sixth in the nation in the NSCAA/adidas coaches poll and await the release of this week's Top 25 that comes out tomorrow. In other national polls the Gauchos improved from No. 8 to No. 7 in the College Soccer News Top 30, and remained in eighth in the Soccer America poll.

UCSB returns home this week with its 13-2-1 overall record to begin its final homestand of the regular season, hosting UC Davis and Stanford. The Gauchos are Aggies will square off on Thursday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m., while the UCSB/Stanford showdown is set for Saturday, November 6th, also at 7:00 p.m. For Saturday's match with the Cardinal, the UC Santa Barbara Athletic Department will be offering 2-for-1 admission to all in attendance who present the "2-for-1 coupon" available online at www.ucsbgauchos.com. The vouchers will also be available at UCSB's Storke Field during Saturday's AYSO games.
