Nov. 16, 2009

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - UC Santa Barbara alum Tony Lochhead and the New Zealand National Team have advanced to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa after defeating Bahrain, 1-0, in the Asia-Oceania World Cup Playoff at Wellington's Westpac Stadium this past weekend.

Lochhead, who played with the Gauchos from 2001-04, also played professionally for the New England Revolution after graduating. He made his debut with the All Whites in October of 2003 and has played every minute of New Zealand's Confederations Cup campaign this year.

This marks just the second time in the New Zealand's history that the All Whites have advanced to the World Cup. The first time was in 1982, the same year Lochhead was born.
