LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara swim teams wrapped up day one of competition down in Long Beach at the Arena Invitational. The event is being held at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
The Gaucho men finished the day in sixth place, just three points behind Cal Poly and right ahead of Arizona State. The women find themselves in eighth place, ahead of tournament host UC San Diego and just behind UCLA. For the men, Stanford has a strong hold on first place with 630.5 points while the second place team, UC San Diego has 249. Cal has the lead for the women with 339 points just ahead of San Diego State at 309.
The best finish of the day for the Gauchos came on the men's side in the second event of the day. The 'A' relay team of Wade Allen, Alexander Campbell, Lucas Norman and Chase Lemley took third place in the final for the 200 yard free relay (1:21.28). Later in the day, Allen and Campbell would finish sixth and seventh, respectively in the 50 yard freestyle final. Freshman Andy Castilleja made it to the bonus final and finished in eighteenth in the 200 IM (1:51.66).
For the women, Heren Alanis advanced to the finals in the 500 yard freestyle and finished in seventh place (4:51.88). Allie Knight advanced to the consolation final taking ninth overall in the 200 IM at 2:02.62 narrowly missing the NCAA 'B' cut mark of 2:01.59. The women's 'A' relay of Knight, Carissa Metcalf, Anne Peanasky and Katie Tomkinson finished seventh place in the 400 yard medley (3:45.33).
UCSB continues Arena Invitational action tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. Events will include the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay.
