Gauchos Have Strong Opening Day in Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Andrea Ward set a new school record in the 100 butterfly while all four of UCSB's representatives set personal records in their respective events on Thursday, day one of the Texas Invitational.

In the morning preliminaries Ward swam a first place time of 51.76 in the 100 butterfly. Not only was it good for a school record, she swam the fifth fastest time in the nation and automatically qualified herself in the NCAA's. Seeded first in the evening finals, Ward swam a 52.32, coming in second place. Ward also swam in the 50 freestyle finishing with times of 23.32 in the prelims and 23.50 in the finals.

Sophomore Katie Records swam in the 200 individual medley and established a personal record in the finals with a time of 203.47.

For the men, Junior Wade Allen swam the 100 butterfly and qualified in eighth place for the finals with a morning time of 47.23. In the evening, Allen tied his personal and school record time of 46.65, good for fourth place in the finals. Allen also swam the 50 freestyle to a time of 19.82 in the prelims. His time of 19.69 in the finals ties him for tenth fastest in the country. 

Senior Ryan Hanni swam a personal record in the 50 freestyle finals and will garner NCAA consideration with a time of 20.05.

Through six events, every swimmer has set a personal record and the Gauchos will look to build on their strong swims on Friday at 10am.
