SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UCSB men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Cal Poly on Saturday in a dual meet at Campus Pool. The final score on the women's side was 183-110, while the men won 203-85. The Gauchos honored their graduating seniors with a ceremony midway through the meet.
The women starrted the meet off fast by winning their first five events. In the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Allie Knight, Sophia Yamauchi, Andrea Ward, and Anne Peanansky took first in 1:45.20. Heren Alanis followed with a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:27.28. Ward won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:51.76. Later in the day Ward won the 100 yard butterfly in 54.54. Knight followed Ward with a victory in the 100 yard backstroke in 56.76. Katie Records took first in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.96.
In the fastest event in swimming, Meghan Bicomong took first place in the 50 yard freestyle 24.35. Yamauchi took first in the 100 yard freestyle, as well, in 52.41. Knight followed up with a win in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:03.08. Jiana Vargem took first in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:21.73. Peanansky won the final individual race for the women in the 200 yard individual medley in 2:07.55. In the final relay of the day, the senior relay team of Yamauchi, Ward, Monica Garcia and Peanansky won the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:30.50.
The men's relay team of Randy Aukhus, Andy Castilleja, Wade Allen, and Ryan Hanni won the 200 yard medley relay to start things off in 1:31.89. Allen went on to win the 200 yard freestyle in 1:40.91. Dylan Kubick followed with a a victory in the 100 yard backstroke in 52.53. Castilleja went on to win the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke in 57.13 and 2:05.31. Mickey Mowry won the 200 yard butterfly in 1:49.76. Hanni sprinted to victory in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles in 20.55 and 44.84, respectively.
Aukhus also took first in the 200 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley in 1:49.43 and 1:52.03, respectively. Mowry took a third first place finish home when he won the 100 yard butterfly in 50.32. To put a close on the meet, the team of Allen, Andrew Barmann, Parker Bovenberg, and Chase Lemley won the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:07.77.
Monika Terry and Tripti Singhal were the top divers for the Gauchos in the one meter, coming in third and fourth with scores of 226.95 and 224.90, respectively. Hanna Tomp placed second in three meter diving with a final score of 237.45. Quetzal Moreno came in 3rd with 232.58 points.
The men will wrap up their dual schedule with a showdown at Campus Pool against Stanford on Friday, February 7th at 2:00pm.
