LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara men's swimming sits closely behind Hawaii in second place after the third day of MPSF Championships. The women's team remains holding on tight to their third place position.
Junior Emily Ward had the highlight swim of the day, breaking the school record in the 100 back at prelims with a time of 54.15. The previous record of 54.20 was set by Cheyenne Low back in 2017. Senior Captain Logan Hotchkiss lowered his own school record in the 200 freestyle, winning the championship final with a time of 1:34.53.
Heaven Quintana got the Gauchos off to a strong start in the 100 butterfly, taking a 2nd place finish with a time of 54.21. Jacquelyn Harris touched closely in 3rd place, touching at a time of 54.44. On the men's side Mason Tittle led the Gauchos, securing a 4th place finish with a time of 46.64. Kian Brouwer trailed in 6th place touching at a 48.02.
Next up in the women's 400 individual medley, Brittney Straw took a 6th place finish in a tight race, touching at a time of 4:20.86. Madelyn Johnson finished in 8th place with a time of 4:25.58. In a spectacular swim Dan Marella touched at a time 3:52.22, taking a 3rd place finish for the Gaucho men.
Emily Ward started off her night with a 5th place finish in the 200 freestyle, touching at a time of 1:48.43. Elena England secured a 7th place finish with a time of 1:49.62. Hotchkiss secured the 1st place finish on the men's side. In a tight race, Joe Lastelic tied for 3rd place with Cal Poly's Dominic Dalpiaz with a time of 1:36.65. Ryan Levy and Fischer Basham took 6th and 8th place finishes touching at times of 1:38.50 and 1:40.70, respectively.
Quintana led the Gaucho women in the 100 breaststroke, touching at a 1:01.56 in 3rd place. Nicola Churchill took the 8th place finish, touching a time of 1:03.83. On the men's side Alec Cullen secured a 5th place finish with a time of 54.14.
In a close 100 backstroke Tara Middleton took the 2nd place finish with a 54.41, while Ward followed in 3rd with a time of 54.54. Jolen Griffin secured a 3rd place finish on the men's side with a time of 47.42. Teammate Justin Nguyen followed in 5th place with a time of 48.60.
In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay, energy levels between all the teams. Griffin, Cullen, Tittle, and Brouwer took the 3rd place finish behind Hawaii and Pacific, with a time 3:13.21.
At the conclusion of day two of the MPSF Championships, the Gaucho men are in second place overall with a total score of 466.5 following closely behind Hawaii in first (535.5 points). On the women's side, Hawaii is in first overall (538 points), UC Davis in second (392 points), and UCSB in third (353 points).
