LONG BEACH, Calif. - UCSB men start off strong at the Big West Championships by taking an early lead on Wednesday night at the Belmont Plaza in Long Beach California by winning two of the three timed finals swam. The women are in a close second to UC Davis with one win of the evening.
The Gaucho men posted victories in the 1,000 freestyle and 800 free relay. Brooks Felton swam the 1,000 free in 9:18.79 to outdistance his closest competitor by nearly five seconds. The Gaucho 800 free relay team cruised to the victory in 6:35.32 thanks to Scott Lindberg, Robbie Dame, Grant Hurst and Garrett Porteous. The 200 Medley relay, Patrick Ota, Blake Nilsson, Pat Cary and Bradley Matsumoto, took second with a time of 1:29.98.
Jessica Cruzat, Jenisse Demeulenaere, Nadia Dwidar and Jen Schwalb won the 800 free relay for the women with a time of 7:20.98, five seconds faster than there closest competition. The women's 200 Medley relay, Jessica Cruzat, Jen Cook, Jen Schwalb and Jamie Lathers took second to UC Irvine with a time of 1:42.81. Ashley Yamahata took fourth in the 1000 free with a time of 10:24.73.

The Gauchos head back to the pool Thursday, February 16, 2006 for morning prelims and evening finals at the Belmont Plaza.
